Last week we provided surgeries for 10 children. It was a glorious day. The opening ceremony was exciting as we heard the stories of the families’ plights. The head of the Liaoning Rehabilitation Association was there as were the president and vice presidents of the Friendship Hospital where we were doing the surgeries and where also our Medical Treatment Center for Abandoned and Handicapped Children is located. Liaoning TV as well as the New North Area TV Station broadcast it. We took lots of photos. My staff and I visited with the families for most of the morning after the ceremony and then we bought the children lunch.

One family sold their home to try to provide this surgery for their child. They were poor villagers and now living in another’s home. One mother brought her two children; both with cataracts in both eyes each, and the grandfather accompanied them. The grandfather was so very pleased that they could get this surgery for free for his grandchildren. The mother also had cataracts in both eyes and could see very little. We agreed to do the surgery for the mother as well.

Heather and her roommate and friends came with us that day to give out stuffed toys to the children. The toys were beautiful and we had a wonderful time with the kids. We will take photographs to them as mementos for the families. They once were blind but now they SEE! Our staff will continue to visit them to encourage them!

2. VDT and TDT

Three of our staff left town this am for a remote area. They will conduct the township/village doctor follow-up training. It is a two-day training. They hope for opportunities otherwise as well. They took many ‘good’ training materials with them. We are so grateful that the Shenyang Health Department approved the medical materials for 2nd level CME credits.
