MPHShenyang, China (October 14th, 2005)
TABLE OF CONTENTS When we were in Henan for our clinic in August one of the pediatric doctors saw two children who are in need of heart surgery. Since then we have been trying to follow up on if and how it would be possible to support surgery for these two children. We asked the Anyang Red Cross to research how much it would cost to provide the surgeries needed in Anyang; they informed us that it would cost approximately $3,150 USD per surgery. Once we had this information we were able to share it with GHO who passed it onto a couple of doctors who are involved already with heart surgeries in China. We are now trying to explore the possibilities of how we can provide surgeries for these children through the GHO clinic in Nanjing or some other way. We need to know how to help these two children, one of them is in desperate need of the surgery. The funds for the training have been supplied in part so we have decided to invite other like-minded organizations to participate. We must have 40 participants in the training to meet the requirement of the training organization. We have several confirmed from other organizations and are awaiting feedback on others. We hope that we can have several of our village doctors to participate in this training and who would in turn be willing to teach this in their home hospitals. We hope that in the next two weeks, things would really come together with all of the necessary attendees in their positions and studying. As we have stated before, the Chinese version of the Land Proposal has been completed and turned into the Chinese government land bureau agency. We expect the government will request more copies for the several other bureaus involved in reviewing our application and the processes of making decisions. We hope for favor that would cause expeditious handling of our application. Becky and I are also finishing up on the English version needed to submit to funding agents. We hope that we will get this done, without further delay and interruption. We also hope to have the wisdom to know exactly to whom we need to submit this proposal for funding. The last word you received from us was that we had only 17 doctors to-date. Things can change in a hurry. Right now we have a sure 40 doctors, with a possibility of a total of 47. We need to make a trip to the border to interview the remaining 7. It would be really perfect if we had the needed 50 doctors. We are supposed to be training 50 doctors. The 40 doctors have arrived and have begun their courses of study. Monday evening was the opening banquet for the staff, volunteers, doctors and special guests. It was a very good evening. This training involves a three-month commitment from the staff, volunteers, doctors, teachers, etc. It requires night and weekend scheduling for all of our staff. We hope that our staff would be encouraged. We hope that we can organize each day, each week end so that staff members and doctors are not stressed and so that we achieve our highest goals. After the week long holiday over it is good to see all back at the office. All have made it back safe and have smiles on their faces. A re-freshening has come to the office because of these precious off-days. Now it is back to work with projects awaiting our attention. Our newlywed (Sunny) is also back. She traveled by bus and taxi to get to work this morning. If she traveled only by bus, it would take three buses and 1 1/2 hours to arrive. She has quite a challenge to face morning and night as she travels to and from the office. We should be moving into the new Hospital space this week or next. The Rehabilitation Hospital has approved our proposal. They came to look at our hospital and were very moved. They feel that our work is very compatible. They have volunteered to allot us the best space in their 300 bed hospital, the third floor. It will be wonderful to not have to drive across town for everything from blood tests to x-rays to surgeries. Most of the surgeries or at least half of them, we should also be able to do in this new hospital. It is a very nice place. Our new third floor is beautiful, bright and cheerful. Please remember us as we sign the contract, move and get settled in and our need for another two doctors and one nurse. We hope that most of our present staff can also attend the Character First training next week. We also hope that it doesn’t all happen at once. We hope that we can move the hospital in 3 days. We need to organize well. The present hospital has asked us to stand good for the contract that we have with them. We have four more years left on this contract and we would like to stand good for any remaining debts that we owe them. I do not think that we actually owe them anything. It seems that neither of us can find the original contract. We need for this to be worked out smoothly with relationships still in tact. Shen Ming Lin was abandoned three months ago and when she was found the ants had covered her face and upper trunk. We later discovered that she had multiple birth defects including Hydrocephalous and an infection in her body. Today we admitted her to the hospital for shunt placement surgery. We hope that that this surgery will go smoothly and that the nurses will be patient and kind with this child. At the present time we have seven children in our hospital and they are doing well. As you know we have approval to move our small hospital to a new location here in Shenyang. We would like to move this week. We hope that when we meet with the hospital that we would have favor and our desires will all be met. We want this meeting to go smoothly and that we would have a meeting of the minds and be in one accord with all the details. We need a new carpenter, either to help Leo as we approach a very busy time with many construction type projects or we need a replacement for Leo. The carpentry shop is completely set up. We need a carpenter who really knows what he is doing. Please remember Leo as they are considering returning to England permanently especially for the children's education. Or if they can receive a gift of $6,000 then Alisha can attend the International school here. It is very expensive but outside of home schooling it is the only viable option for children to give them the right foundation. And there is not a home schooling network here, like in the USA, so children are virtually isolated from other children their own age. At any rate we need to remember Leo and his family and because of the increase in our big construction type projects, we do need a good, full-time carpenter who feels that he is being called to China. That government is kicking out all NGO's ( humanitarian, non-profits) at the end of the year. So a profit making set up is the only option. We are thinking of a small factory to produce an item for export to China. I have in mind a very specific item to make and the basic machine to produce the item costs $12 - $15,000 USD. Approximately $35,000 would kick start the operation and our market would be China, where this item does not exist but could become popular very easily. To the factory we can add a small medical clinic. Moreover, all factories have their own small clinics attached. Through the clinic I think we could do many things that would bless and build friendships. Cynthia Huff is flat on her back in bed with bronchial pneumonia or bronchitis. It is really very bad. She cannot speak a sentence without breaking into a serious and painful sounding cough. Her lungs are clear but her bronchial tubes are very infected and inflamed. She has had several courses of several anti-biotics. Nothing touched it until now she is having two IVs a day. This anti-biotic seems to be knocking out the infection. It is hard for her to stay down. But she really needs to as the very worst thing is that the bacteria would develop immunity to this anti-biotic as it has done with the rest. Sincerely, Paula and Staff
